ROME TRANSPORT

Rome Transportation - Rome is a big city and has a comprehensive system with hundreds of bus routes and a metro system. You can get Tourist Cards for transport in Rome Italy. One of these is a three day BT1 and it will give you free passage on buses and the underground, and also on suburban trains out to places like Lido, Pantan, etc. The cost is about €12-15 and is a good buy if you are going to be moving around for three days. There is also a one day pass which costs about 5 euro - this is a BIG. If you are going a single journey the cost is less than 2 euro. You can buy these tickets from any ticket machine.

Travel Guide

Rome's Underground System is comfortable and fast. You’ll see the stations as they are marked by a great big white M on a red background. There is a Red Line and a Blue Line. At the main Termini Station, they intersect. Pick up a map in any station and your hotel may also have one.

Buses are numerous and go all over the city. They are run by ATAC the city bus company and telephone 167 555 666. When you find a bus stop you’ll see a yellow sign giving you the bus numbers that stop there and all the main streets and stops on the way.

Taxis are another means of transport and official taxis are yellow or white and all have a meter. They will charge extra for luggage and also for late night journeys.

Unless you are planning to visit places outside Rome, do not bother to rent a car or try to drive in Rome, even during the "slow' season. Rome has had traffic problems forever, and even a "Sunday drive' turns to gridlock. You are much better off taking the local bus system or a train to and from the airport, or a taxi or airport limousine.

Rome Maps of the city are free from the information booth at the airport, or any Rome tourist info kiosk around the city center and historical district. You can also pick up maps or get Italy tourist information in any hotel lobby. The Romans are very friendly and will help you to get info for wherever you'd like to see.

Since most of the Attractions in Rome are within walking distance from each other, if you book your hotel in the historical district, you'll find it very easy to get around.
